Massage Therapy Services
Swedish Massage in Peterborough
If you're new to massage or just need a full-body reset, Swedish massage is a great place to start. Long, flowing strokes warm up the muscles, ease surface tension, and calm the nervous system. Most clients book Swedish for stress relief, better sleep, and general recovery from a busy week. Sessions are typically 60 or 90 minutes, with pressure dialed in to whatever feels right on the day. No prior massage experience needed; just show up and let your RMT take it from there.
Deep Tissue Massage in Peterborough
Deep tissue massage is built for the chronic stuff: stubborn knots, locked-up shoulders, low back pain that never really leaves. Your RMT works through deeper layers of muscle and fascia using slower, more focused pressure to release adhesions and restore range of motion. Athletes, desk workers, and anyone dealing with repetitive strain tend to feel the biggest difference. It can be intense in the moment, but most clients walk out lighter and looser. Pair it with a float for an extra recovery boost.
Cupping Therapy in Peterborough
Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissue, increasing blood flow and helping tight muscles let go. Several of our RMTs offer cupping as part of a regular massage session, or as a focused treatment for specific problem areas. It's especially popular for upper back and shoulder tension, tight IT bands, and post-workout recovery. Yes, it can leave round marks for a few days; no, they aren't bruises. Many clients find it pairs really well with deep tissue work in the same session.
TMJ Massage in Peterborough
TMJ massage targets the jaw, face, neck, and shoulder muscles connected to jaw dysfunction. If you're dealing with clicking, clenching, grinding, tension headaches, or pain that radiates up into your temples, this is the treatment to ask about. Jessica Vautour leads our TMJ work and offers both external and intra-oral techniques to address trigger points in the masseter, temporalis, and surrounding muscles. Sessions run from 30 to 90 minutes. Many clients notice meaningful relief after a single appointment, especially when combined with stress management and any guidance from their dentist.
Prenatal Massage
If you're pregnant, we offer prenatal massage with pregnancy-specific positioning and care across all trimesters.
Myofascial Release in Peterborough
Fascia is the thin connective tissue that wraps every muscle, organ, and joint in your body. When it gets restricted, you feel it as tightness, limited movement, or pain that doesn't quite make sense. Myofascial release uses sustained, gentle pressure to soften and lengthen those restrictions, often unlocking areas that haven't responded to other treatments. It's especially useful for old injuries, scar tissue, and posture-related pain. Your RMT may use myofascial techniques on their own or blend them into a broader treatment plan.
Trigger Point Therapy in Peterborough
Trigger points are those tender, hyper-sensitive spots in a muscle that can refer pain to completely different areas of the body. A trigger point in your shoulder, for example, might be the actual source of a headache you've been chasing for weeks. This technique uses precise, sustained pressure to deactivate those points and break the pain cycle. It's commonly woven into deep tissue or therapeutic sessions, and it's one of the most effective tools for stubborn, location-specific pain.
Fascial Stretch Therapy in Peterborough
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a table-based, assisted stretching system that targets the fascia and joint capsules, not just the muscles. Nick Plummer is a certified Fascial Stretch Therapist and offers this as a standalone session for clients focused on mobility, athletic performance, and injury prevention. You stay fully clothed, your therapist guides you through dynamic stretches, and you walk out moving noticeably better. Great for runners, lifters, weekend warriors, and anyone who's tired of feeling stiff.
Sports & Performance Massage in Peterborough
Whether you're training for a race, recovering from a tough block, or just trying to stay durable, sports massage helps your body adapt and bounce back. Your RMT will combine deep tissue, trigger point, stretching, and sometimes cupping to address the specific demands of your sport. Pre-event sessions focus on activation and mobility; post-event sessions focus on recovery and flushing out fatigue. Several of our practitioners bring a strong sports and performance background to their work, making it a solid fit for serious athletes and active hobbyists alike.
Meet Our Registered Massage Therapists in Peterborough
Every massage therapist at Flow Spa is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). That means each of our therapists has completed an accredited 2,200-hour Massage Therapy program, passed provincial board exams, and is held to the CMTO's professional standards of practice and continuing education. When you book with us, you're working with a regulated health professional, not just someone with a massage table.
Your treatment is covered under most extended health benefits plans, and we offer direct billing to most major insurers.

Good to Know
Coverage varies by plan. Most extended health plans cover RMT services, but the per-visit cap, annual maximum, and co-pay percentage are set by your specific plan. Call your insurer or check your benefits portal if you want exact numbers before your appointment.
A doctor's note may be required. Some plans require a referral from your physician before they'll cover massage therapy. Worth checking before your first visit.
HSA and wellness accounts are welcome. If you have a Health Spending Account or wellness benefit, we'll provide the receipts you need.
Real-time approval isn't guaranteed. Most claims process instantly, but occasionally an insurer will require manual review. In that case, you pay the full amount and get reimbursed by your insurer after the claim is approved.
Massage Therapy FAQs
-
You can book online through our booking page, give us a call, or stop by the front desk. Online is fastest and lets you pick your therapist, service type, and time. If you don't see availability that works for you, ask to be added to our waitlist; we often have same-day openings from last-minute cancellations.
-
Pricing varies by length and therapist. We offer 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90-minute sessions, and combo pricing when you pair a massage with another service like floating, infrared sauna, or cold plunge. Full pricing is on our pricing page. With direct billing, most clients pay little to nothing out of pocket depending on their insurance coverage.
-
It depends on what you're working with. For chronic pain or a specific issue, weekly or bi-weekly sessions are common while you make progress. For general stress, recovery, and maintenance, every 3-4 weeks works well for most people. Your RMT will recommend a treatment frequency based on your goals during your first session.
-
Wear whatever you're comfortable in to your appointment. During the massage, you'll undress to your comfort level in private, then lie under the sheet on the table. Your therapist will only uncover the area being worked on. If you'd rather stay clothed, fascial stretch therapy and certain TMJ techniques can be done in workout-style clothing.
-
Massage therapy isn't covered by OHIP, but it's covered under most extended health benefits plans through your employer or private insurance. We direct bill to most major Canadian insurers including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Blue Cross, and more. Coverage amounts vary by plan; check your benefits portal or call your insurer for specifics.
-
Most insurance plans don't require a referral, but some do. If your plan requires one, you'll need to provide it before we can submit your direct billing claim. Worth checking before your first visit if you plan to use insurance.
-
Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes for relaxation and general tension relief. Deep tissue uses slower, more focused pressure to release chronic tension and stubborn knots. Therapeutic massage is a broader term for any treatment-focused session that combines techniques based on your specific needs. Your RMT will recommend the right approach based on your goals and what they feel during the session.
-
A good massage shouldn't feel like an injury. There can be moments of "good pain" when your therapist works through a tight spot, especially with deep tissue or trigger point work, but it should always feel productive. Always tell your therapist if anything feels too intense; pressure can be adjusted at any time.
-
Prenatal massage is generally safe and beneficial once you're past the first trimester, but check with your healthcare provider first if you have any concerns. Let us know when you book so we can match you with a therapist comfortable with prenatal positioning and techniques.
-
Most clients book 60 or 75-minute sessions, which is enough time for a full-body massage with focused work on problem areas. 30 and 45-minute appointments work well for targeted treatment of a specific area, like jaw, neck, or low back. 90 minutes is ideal for full-body work plus extended focus on multiple areas, or for clients who want a deeper recovery experience.
-
TMJ massage focuses on the muscles connected to jaw function, including the masseter, temporalis, neck, and shoulders. It often includes intra-oral work, where your therapist gently massages muscles inside the mouth while wearing gloves. Regular full-body massage doesn't typically address these muscles in depth. TMJ-focused sessions are best for jaw pain, clenching, grinding, and tension headaches.
