The Struggle We All Face Is Real

Is constant stress and mental noise ruining your peace?

Dealing with chronic pain, sore muscles, or slow recovery between workouts?

Feeling like there's never a moment when the world actually goes quiet?

What Is Float Therapy?

Float therapy, also known as floatation therapy, sensory deprivation, or R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy), involves relaxing in a spacious tank of warm salt water that's dense enough to keep anyone effortlessly buoyant. The water and air are kept at skin-neutral temperature, so you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins.

With nothing to see, hear, or fight against, your body finally gets to stand down. Your nervous system shifts out of fight-or-flight, your brain releases dopamine and endorphins, and your mind is free to wander, problem-solve, or simply rest. Many people compare an hour in the tank to several hours of deep sleep.

Floating has been around since 1954 and is backed by a growing body of published research, including NIH-funded studies on floating as a therapy for stress and anxiety.

Sound

Your ears rest just below the surface of the water (earplugs optional), and the cabins are insulated against outside noise. The result is a peaceful silence that's almost impossible to find anywhere else.

Sight

Close the door, turn off the light, and you float in total darkness; you won't notice a difference between eyes open or closed. Prefer some light or music? You're in control the whole time, and both can stay on as long as you like.

Touch

Ten inches of water and about 1,000 lbs of dissolved Epsom salt keep you floating effortlessly. With the water and air at body temperature, the sensation of touch fades away and your muscles and joints finally get a complete break from gravity.

The Benefits of Float Therapy

Stress Relief & Deep Relaxation

Floating is one of the most powerful stress relief tools available. Inside the tank, your sympathetic nervous system (the fight-or-flight response) quiets down, and your parasympathetic system takes over to help you rest, recover, and recharge. In controlled studies, floating has measured out as more relaxing than bed rest, based on perceived stress, stress hormones, and brain wave activity. Most clients walk out feeling like they've had the best nap of their life.

Chronic Pain Relief

The weightless environment takes all pressure off your spine, joints, and muscles. Floating has been shown to ease symptoms of chronic pain conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, neck and back pain, and cancer-related pain; conditions with few natural treatment options. Many of our regulars first came in for pain relief and kept coming back because it works for them.

Athletic Recovery & Performance

Athletes have used Epsom salt and floating for decades to support recovery and ease muscle soreness after hard training. The weightless environment increases blood flow to tired muscles and joints, and many athletes use their float time to visualize performance while their body recovers. If you're training hard, pair your float with our cold plunge, infrared sauna, or a sports massage for a full recovery day.

Better Sleep

Many floaters find their sleep improves noticeably after a session. By calming the nervous system and clearing mental clutter, floating helps your body remember what deep rest actually feels like. Some clients even fall asleep in the tank, which is completely safe; the buoyancy keeps you fully supported.

A Quieter Mind

With zero external input, your mind gets a rare chance to settle. Many people find floating helps with anxiety, mental fatigue, and that always-on feeling that comes from constant notifications and deadlines. Studies have also linked floating to improved creativity and problem-solving; researchers found that float sessions increased creative ideas and free-flowing imagery in university students and professors.

Magnesium Absorption

The float solution is concentrated magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), and some magnesium may be absorbed through the skin while you float. Magnesium plays a role in hundreds of processes in the body, and many North Americans don't get enough of it through diet alone. As a bonus, the salt water leaves your skin feeling silky and soft; no pruning, ever.

Floating During Pregnancy

Pregnant clients love floating. The buoyancy takes the weight of the baby completely off the mother's body, which can be a huge relief for lower back pain. There's even a special side-lying position many expecting moms prefer. If you're in your third trimester or have any concerns, check with your physician before booking.

Our Float Cabins

Flow Spa has two private float rooms, each with its own spacious Pro Float cabin, private shower, and locking door. We specifically chose these cabins for their roomy, open feel; even clients with claustrophobia consistently tell us they felt comfortable and in control.

Every cabin gives you full control over your environment:

  • Lights on or off — your choice, adjustable any time

  • Music or silence — calming audio available throughout your float

  • Door open or closed — there are no latches, and you can get out whenever you like

Clean, Every Single Float

The water is fully filtered 3 to 5 times between every session, passing through an intense filtration system, UV sterilization, and ozone disinfection. Combined with the naturally sanitary Epsom salt solution, the result is water that's cleaner than a swimming pool.

Your First Float: What to Expect

New to floating? Here's how it works:

  1. Arrive a few minutes early. We'll walk you through everything and answer any questions.

  2. Shower in your private room. Each float room has its own shower; rinse off before you float.

  3. Step in and lie back. The salt does all the work. Lights and music are under your control.

  4. Float for 60 minutes (or longer). Most first-timers are shocked at how fast it goes; we call it the time-travelling effect.

  5. Shower, then take your time. Rinse off the salt, use our hair-drying and vanity area, and enjoy some tea or water while returning to the real world.

How to Prepare

  • Skip the coffee for several hours beforehand; it can make it harder to relax

  • Hydrate well before and after your float

  • Avoid shaving the day of your float — the salt can irritate freshly shaved skin

  • Eat a light meal 60 to 90 minutes ahead to prevent a rumbling stomach

  • We provide everything else: towels, robes, earplugs, body wash, shampoo, moisturizer, tea, and water

  • You're always in control of your environment. Our Pro Float cabins were specifically chosen for their spacious feel, and even clients with significant claustrophobia have floated comfortably. You can leave the door open and the lights on for as long as you like; there are no latches on the doors.

  • Not at all. You can keep the lights and music on and still get the benefits of floating. Many clients prefer it that way, including floaters with tinnitus who relax better with calm music playing.

  • Bathing suits are optional. Your room is a private sanctuary with its own shower and a locking door. Most clients find their floats are better without a suit, since it removes one more source of sensation, but do whatever feels comfortable for you.

  • No right way; choose your own adventure. Hands at your sides, folded on your chest, or up by your ears with palms facing up if your shoulders feel pushed upward. You can even sit up or float with the door open. Explore what works best for you.

  • Yes, and pregnant floaters are some of our happiest clients. The buoyancy takes the baby's weight off your body, which can be a major relief for lower back pain. If you're in your third trimester or have concerns, check with your physician first.

  • Feel free! The water keeps you completely buoyant, and it's extremely unlikely you'd roll over. Some clients book floats specifically to nap. Worst case, you wake up to a bit of salt water near your eyes, and there's a fresh-water rinse bottle within reach in every cabin.

  • The water is fully filtered 3 to 5 times between each float through an intense filtration system, UV sterilization, bromine, and ozone disinfection. Combined with the naturally sanitary high-concentration Epsom salt solution, the water is cleaner than a pool.

  • Yes. The water is kept at skin temperature, so you won't overheat, and the deep relaxation of floating actually helps reduce blood pressure.

  • We recommend waiting about 10 days. Check that the water runs fully clear when you shower at home; if colour is still coming out, wait a couple more days.

  • Float therapy isn't typically covered by extended health plans the way massage therapy is. If you have a Health Spending Account or wellness benefit, we'll provide the receipts you need and you might be reimbursed for it by your plan.
